Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve
Located entirely within northwestern Manatee County, Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve (TCAP) was designated in 1984. The preserve contains more than 25,000 acres of predominantly submerged and wetland areas within Tampa Bay, Miguel Bay, Joe Bay, Bishop Harbor, and tidal waters of all tributaries.
Relic limestone outcroppings,
rather than traditional reefs, line the underwater landscape. Dotted with hard and soft corals, algae, and sponges, this hardbottom habitat supports a diverse array of invertebrates, marine mammals, reptiles, and fishes.
Hardbottom outcroppings and seagrass beds, like those found in Terra Ceia, are a critical link for our fisheries. Juvenile fish seek both safety from predators and nourishment from algae, crustaceans, and invertebrates in the shallow waters.

Research & Monitoring
Staff at Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves conduct annual benthic surveys, place underwater cameras to observe nekton species, and organize marine debris clean-ups with groups of student volunteers. These activities help to capture a baseline index of Terra Ceia ecosystems.
